The imminent mass deployment of pervasive computing technologies such as WSN and RFID tags, together with the increasing participation of the Web community, will soon make available an incredible amount of information about the physical and social worlds and their processes. This opens up the possibility of exploiting all such information for the provisioning of context- aware services facilitating users in gathering information about the world, interacting with it, and understanding it. Specifically, in this book, I propose a simple model for representing "facts" about the physical world in a structured fashion, besides the design and implementation of a general infrastructure for "context-aware" services able to organize and provide access to contextual data. Once the above elements are well integrated in a framework (or paradigm) for application development, my thesis demonstrates how users provided of a computing device (as a modern mobile phone or PDA) and of technologies enabling the interaction with the surrounding world (as RFID reader, GPS antenna or a Wireless Sensor Network) gain access to a number of futuristic and unexplored services and applications.

This book set out to develop using novel electromagnetic structures an innovative sensor for environmental detection based on a microwave Substrate Integrated Waveguides (SIW) technology. This technology aims to realize microwave passive sensors able to be integrated in wireless sensor network while keeping high performances in terms of sensitivity and selectivity. The proposed SIW environmental sensor has the advantage of providing a new fabrication solution for RF/microwave environmental sensing and greatly simplifies the sensor's manufacturing processes and maintains low costs. For wireless environmental sensor, it is important to associate a tag to each SIW sensing element for wireless communication identification. The book has introduced a wireless communication channel for microwave RFID tags. The tags are based on SIW cavity resonators where each resonator is connected to an antenna. The communication channel is modeled using a two-port matrix model consisting of the resonator and the antennas mathematical representation.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is rapidly emerging within bio-medical engineering applications. Particularly in harsh and challenging environments, RFID provides fast and reliable item identification and tracking solution. In a typical passive RFID system, objects to be identified are marked with tags, consisting of an antenna and an integrated circuit. In the future, wearable RFID tags integrated with daily clothing could provide multi-functional garments for real-time remote bio-monitoring of human vital signs without any human involvement. At ultra-high frequencies (UHF), the human body is electrically a challenging application environment for the passive tag due to its high permittivity and high losses. The human body in close proximity tends to interact with the tag in a disadvantageous manner, resulting in severe overall tag performance degradation. This book presents a novel approach for the development of a UHF human arm model for wearable antenna applications. It is verified that the human arm model can be used as a powerful tool for future wearable antenna design and optimisation.
